Mufti Jaleel Ahmad was a distinguished scholar, an adept administrator, and a visionary politician whose multifaceted contributions left an indelible mark on religious, educational, and political spheres. His life exemplified simplicity, dedication, and a selfless commitment to the upliftment of society. From establishing Jamia Rashidiya to his impactful political endeavors, Mufti Jaleel Ahmad’s legacy continues to inspire generations.
Early Life and Education
Born in 1941 in Nagina, District Bijnor, Mufti Jaleel Ahmad hailed from a respected family. His father, Qari Ahmad Hasan, was his first mentor, imparting foundational Islamic education. After completing his intermediate education, Mufti Jaleel Ahmad pursued higher studies at the esteemed Darul Uloom Deoband. Known for his remarkable intelligence and sharp memory, he excelled in Islamic jurisprudence (Fiqh), earning widespread respect as a scholar. His deep understanding of Shariah principles and his ability to explain intricate legal matters distinguished him among his peers.
Educational Contributions and the Establishment of Jamia Rashidiya
Driven by a passion for disseminating Islamic education, Mufti Jaleel Ahmad founded Jamia Arabia Rashidiya, which soon became a beacon of knowledge in the region. Through relentless efforts, he developed the institution into a prominent center for Islamic learning, offering courses up to Daurah-e-Hadith (advanced studies in Hadith).
During his tenure, he also provided leadership to Madrasa Tajweed-ul-Quran, ensuring quality Quranic education. While initially focusing on visually impaired students, the madrasa later expanded its reach, offering education to all students, irrespective of their physical abilities. This transition reflected his inclusive vision for education, ensuring that learning opportunities were accessible to a diverse group of individuals.
Mufti Jaleel Ahmad’s initiatives underscored his belief in accessible and quality education for all sections of society, leaving a legacy of inclusivity and academic excellence.
Religious and Social Services
Mufti Jaleel Ahmad played a pivotal role in serving the Muslim community through various religious and social initiatives. As a member of the Central Committee of Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind, he actively engaged in matters concerning the welfare of Muslims in India.
He also held the prestigious position of Qazi-e-Shahar (City Judge) in Nagina, a role that required exceptional wisdom and fairness. As the custodian of the historic Eidgah in Nagina, he worked tirelessly to maintain its sanctity and ensure its proper management. His decisions and services consistently reflected his dedication to justice, communal harmony, and the betterment of the society at large.
Remarkable Political Career
Mufti Jaleel Ahmad’s political career was characterized by his unwavering dedication to public welfare and development.
1977 Election Victory:
In 1977, he contested the Afzalgarh Assembly seat as a candidate of the Janata Party. Securing a historic victory with 118,885 votes, he served for two-and-a-half years, during which he launched several developmental projects to address the needs of his constituents. His tenure was marked by a focus on infrastructure, education, and healthcare.
Role in the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP):
Later, Mufti Jaleel Ahmad joined the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and became its District President for Bijnor. Under his leadership, the BSP achieved significant electoral success in the region, including winning three assembly seats in Bijnor during the 1989 elections.
Conflict with BSP Leadership:
Disenchanted with internal leadership changes under Mayawati, he parted ways with the BSP and aligned himself with Narayan Dutt Tiwari of the Indian National Congress.
1989 Parliamentary Elections:
In 1989, he contested the Amroha parliamentary seat, securing 86,630 votes. Although he did not win, his campaign reflected his popularity and political acumen.
Mufti Jaleel Ahmad also served as a member of the Municipal Board and the Waqf Board, further amplifying his contributions to community development.
Other Significant Contributions
Mufti Jaleel Ahmad extended his social services to areas often overlooked. As a member of the District Jail Committee, he made regular visits to prisons, addressing the grievances of inmates and advocating for humane treatment. His compassionate approach, combined with a keen understanding of societal issues, made him a respected figure across communities.
Simplicity, Quiet Demeanor, and Dedication to the Community
Despite his numerous achievements, Mufti Jaleel Ahmad remained a model of humility and simplicity. Known for his quiet demeanor, he avoided unnecessary public displays, preferring to focus on scholarly discussions and practical solutions to communal challenges. His profound expertise in Islamic jurisprudence, coupled with his selfless commitment to societal welfare, earned him widespread admiration.
Demise and Burial
After battling diabetes for several years, Mufti Jaleel Ahmad passed away on the morning of November 30, 1996, at the age of 55. The next day, on December 1, 1996, he was laid to rest in the graveyard of Jamia Rashidiya. His funeral was attended by countless people, a testament to the deep respect and love he garnered during his lifetime.
Following his demise, his son, Maulana Dr. Khaliq Ahmad, succeeded him as the head of Jamia Rashidiya. Under his supervision, the institution continues to thrive, upholding the legacy of its founder and offering advanced Islamic education, including Daurah-e-Hadith.
